Pearl Fractional Laser

A safe, effective treatment for restoring the skin’s natural glow

Dr Caswell was the first medical practitioner in the world to use the Pearl Fractional in a commercial capacity.  She realized that the technology, with walk in walk out treatment regimes, limited down time, no requirement for sedation, and effective results often with a single treatment, was something that her patients wanted.  She is one of the most experienced doctors in Australia on this equipment and perhaps the world.  The procedure is made comfortable with a specially formulated numbing gel, so that numbing injections are not required, and the skin will remain comfortable for a number of hours post procedure.

The attraction of a single treatment compares favorably with other devices where 4-6 treatments may be needed to see visible results.  In cases of severely damaged skin,  a second treatment may be needed, however Dr Caswell will discuss and recommend a treatment regime for you  at consultation.

The Pearl Fractional is ideal for:

  • Age spots
  • Skin quality issues, collagen regeneration
  • Pigmentation
  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Overall skin appearance

What is Pearl Fractional?
The Pearl procedure combines the impact of resurfacing laser with the gentleness and safety of non-invasive procedures to treat aging and sun-damaged skin.  Pearl reduces wrinkles, uneven texture, and solar damage with fewer treatments and les overall recovery time than other technologies to provide a healthy, pearl-like glow.

How does the Pearl Treatment work?
During the procedure, the top layer of skin is treated with pulses of light in the pre-selected pattern.  The laser simultaneously sends heat to the deeper layers of the skin to provide longer-term benefits.  A natural protective dressing forms from the skin to minimize downtime during the restorative process.  On day 3 or 4 this natural dressing will peel or slough off, revealing new, healthy, vibrant skin underneath.

What is the “social” downtime?
Downtime is the time spent recovering from a procedure.  With social downtime you can still continue your normal daily activities.  However, you may not wish to attend important social events because your face may be pink/red as the skin replaces itself.  It is important that your treatment planning also includes mention of our social schedule so that procedures are planned not to clash with important events.

How does a Pearl Treatment feel?
Due to the specially formulated numbing gel that Dr Caswell uses, patients do not report any distinct discomfort during the procedure.  Pain relief medication and a home care kit is provided to patients so that they may have a comfortable night sleep.

When will I see results?
Results are generally noticeable by day 3, 4 after completing your procedure; however they are influenced by your general state of health, smoking and other lifestyle habits, how well you heel and the condition being treated.  Dr Caswell is able to provide you with a choice of clinical and aseptic makeup to cover your skin if need to return to work before your skin has healed completely.  Other than the products recommended by Dr Caswell, she does not endorse the use of cosmetic items on the skin until the skin has completely healed.  You may potentially impact on your results and it is best to check with Dr Caswell before application.

All patients are photographed using specialist equipment before and after procedure so that the difference to your skin can be quantified.

Are there any restrictions on my activity after a Pearl treatment?
Dr Caswell will provide you with a home care kit, and instructions how to look after your skin during the healing phases.  There are few restrictions to your activities; however it is advisable that you do not undertake activities that may cause increased sun exposure or direct trauma to the skin.  Any outdoor activity should be accompanied with a hat and methods to reduce your sun exposure as you will not be able to wear sunscreen during the healing phase.  Unfortunately, you still have to do the dishes!

Can Pearl be part of a combination therapy treatment?
To maximize your treatment outcomes, most treatment regimes that Dr Caswell supervises and conducts require combination therapy – right tool for the job.  Dr Caswell will discuss your options and access to a range of treatment options and combine these options into a programme for you to work through.

How does Pearl compare to older laser technologies?
Pearl offers an effective treatment option with fewer treatments needed, when compared to older laser technologies, in particular Pearl results are comparable to CO2 and Erbium laser procedures.  Next generation Pearl also compares very favorably to older fractionated technologies as it requires, generally, one treatment for noticeable results compared to 4-6 separate treatments.

Who is a candidate for a Pearl treatment?
Ideal candidates are those patients with light to medium skin tones, and mild to moderate sun damage.  However Dr Caswell has successfully improved less than ideal candidates, with good results.  Dr Caswell however uses a well established programme to help improve all skin types, and by conditioning the skin before treatment, good results can be gained by most candidates.
